I began Void Wanderer as a small space exploration game centered around a random universe algorithm I developed. The universe is created completely and randomly from scratch the first time you start the game, complete with factions, random races with backgrounds, different economies, and zillions of other gameplay things. Right now the random universe is complete and I am implementing gameplay. Gameplay will consist of traveling from planet to planet, exploring and making money, as well as engaging in warfare on pirates, local governments, and random aliens from other dimensions. You will have to deal with local and galactic events that will have effects on you and the galaxy. Aligning yourself with certain factions will cause trouble depending on whose space you are in. And of course you will have to pay taxes and deal with the ups and downs of the economy just like normal citizens.
As you travel you will amass tons of knowledge, ships, trade goods, money and crew. Eventually you will become powerful enough to wage epic interstellar warfare and hopefully take over the whole business. But that would take a while.
Anyway the game is in development, but a beta version will be posted here soon. Here are some screenshots, those who played space empires may be familiar with some of the gui elements and planets in the game. Dont worry, these are just placeholder artwork:
This is the basic navigation screen between planets. This is the "Crenshaw System."
Apparently Crenshaw is inhabited by the "violent" race known as "The Rooney." Even names are randomized, each species picture is randomly assigned to a random name and a random disposition.
When we tire of this system, we go to the Sector Map, where we can se all the systems in a sector. Hyperdriveing somewhere takes an impresse amount of fuel, so be wary. Later in the game, we will be going from sector to sector, and then from galaxy to galaxy when new transport methods arise. The unniverse created is literally infinite. It can be generated on the fly and then stored in text files on your computer to be reloaded again when you visit again. In fact, because it's infinite, interesting things WILL happen...
And now we come upon another alien race. In the Alzon system. Note the dynamic populations. Populations of a planet change depending on the agriculture of the planet, general galactic happiness and well being of the economy, and the quality of life at home.
